Changing Roles in IT

I'm conducting a poll to gain some insight into the changing roles in IT. Here's some background: In August 2009 I wrote about the need to attract young IT professionals to the mainframe as well as the SHARE zNextGen project.

Just a few days ago I sat in on my first zNextGen call to see what this project is all about. Some discussion centered on the kinds of projects, speakers and articles that would interest zNextGen members. I'd assumed the focus would be on newcomers to the mainframe. To my surprise though, I realized that many others on the call weren't actually new to the mainframe -- but they were new situation professionally. For instance, some long-time z/OS systems programmers are now working as DB2 DBAs. Others talked about going from CICS programming to installing and supporting z/OS.

With that in mind, I'm interested learning more about this trend. So please contact me at troy@troylcoleman.com with your responses to these questions:

•    Are you seeing job role changes in your IT organization? If yes, please give examples of what you're seeing.
•    How long have you been working on z/OS?
•    Has your own role changed recently? If yes, please chronologically list the job titles you've held, along with the length of time in each role.
•    Has your company recently hired people who are new to z/OS? If yes, what positions are these new hires taking?

Everyone who responds will receive a summarized copy of the information I gather. This information will be shared with the zNextGen project, but all identities will be kept private. Your response will help guide the types of projects and events zNextGen will pursue.

If you have questions, please post them in Comments.
