Bi-Annual z/OS Releases a Benefit to Customers

Many z/OS system programmers have questions about last week's IBM z/OS statement of direction (SOD) announcement, but the message is simple. Starting with z/OS 2.1, IBM intends to deliver new z/OS releases every other year instead of annually.

To me, this is a case of less being more. The z/OS customers I talk to spend a lot of resources just trying to get through the upgrade every year. Because of this effort, they never get around to exploiting new features. Implementing a new z/OS version can take from 6-18 months. Bi-annual updates gives customers the time they need to learn and take advantage of the new features.

z/OS bloggers Cheryl Watson and Marc Wambeke have more on this topic.

Here's the entire list of IBM z/OS SOD announcements.
