Thanks for the great assistance on this. As an experienced UNIX admin who is a newbie with regards to NIM (and even AIX overall) I found this article to be a FANTASTIC resource.

A prospective customer has a p4 server running 5.2. It's got to be migrated to a p6 server on 5.3. No NIM or LPARs, just two standalone servers. The mksysb migration should work with physical media, except the bosinst.data needs to be read from diskette, which means I'll have to find a diskette drive. http://bit.ly/aReSnD

I'll see if the alt_disk_install is an option for their existing 5.2 server. Or maybe I can create NIM master on p6, just for the migration, create the mksysb and then clobber the NIM. End game is replace one small standalone running 5.2 with newer p6 standalone running 5.3.

I m doing migration AIX 5.2 TL-10 to AIX 5.3 TL-12 using NIM.

But its fails while restoring and gives below error

I have a similar situation: have to migrate an AIX53 image from an old P4 hardware to a new p7 LPAR.
My NIM server is AIX7.1.
We have a good mksysb image for our aix 5.3 source
Our target is to migrate this to AIX 6.1 on the new p7 hardware.
I set up the customized bosinst.data file as specified above, which is the same as the specification in the AIX install manual.
When I netboot to the target LPAR, the netboot image loads properly, but then we get a hardware status code in the HMC console stating that there is an "architecture imcompatibility".
Any ideas on this?

Further to my last post: we checked our LPAR setup, and found that the mode was set to "default". We changed the LPAR mode to "POWER6", and then the NIM migration install proceeded normally, with no messages about "architecture incompatibility".
What a great tool this is for migration installs.

Great article so... I've decided to try it as well.
However, I'm encountering the same issue you had with the Migration hanging at LED 0088 "Erasing Disks".

My NIM server is at 7100-01-07-1316
and I'm restoring/migrating an AIX 5.3 mksysb to AIX 6100-07-04-1216.

Do you recall the manual work-around that IBM gave you to correct this issue?

I don't see a fix for an AIX 7.1 environment.

If I were you I would contact IBM support for help, then post your results here so the next person that runs into the issue can benefit from it.
