The test *box* is helpful but almost as good is having a test environment - simply a test LPAR. It's easy to create with virtual disk, and if you don't have the luxury of a separate physical Power System, you can at least create a crash and burn environment. Of course this doesn't give you a whole infrastructure where you can test firmware and VIOS and HMC upgrades and the rest. Still, it's quite a step better than testing in production or using your DR server as a standby lab.

Couldn't agree more. Using test enviroment gives when you are presenting solutions.

I agree completely with your article and only wish that IBM could produce a partner program whereby developers and consultants could register a non-commercial licence so that they could build and maintain crash and burn/lab systems etc.
